Local Designations

In some jurisdictions, municipalities have the capacity to designate local landmarks and local historic districts. While criteria and requirements vary, most local governments have adopted a process like the National Register of Historic Places, requiring an extensive physical description, historic context, and a statement of significance. While listing on the National Register is purely honorific and imposes no restrictions on a property owner, local designation often requires design review for building alterations. In some cases, local designation can also confer tax benefits.
